Editing Your News Feeds:
Facts, Alternative Facts,
Propaganda and
Just Plain BS

Today, perhaps more than ever, we must take responsibility for vetting the news we receive. Trusted news sources are often compromised by politics, ideology, and/or money. In this day and age when anyone can develop content based on facts, alternative facts, or just plain bull*&^%, click “send” or “post” and have it read around the world, we must be diligent editors of the “news” we receive, even from those we have traditionally trusted. With almost unlimited access to news, how do you know what is factual and what is not?

This timely and important program will provide insight into the reporting of events, the creation of news, the distribution of “news” and the consequences, good and bad, of broader access to information. Our speakers, Todd Milbourn and Lisa Heyamoto, will explore the critical questions we must ask about the news we receive from known and unknown sources. You will take away practical tips and tools for fact checking to ensure you can be a good editor of the stories you receive to ensure your actions, including the forwarding of “interesting news stories” are based on facts, not fiction.

Todd Milbourn is an award-winning investigative reporter and journalism instructor at the University of Oregon. He got his start in newspapers at The Modesto Bee, where his investigation of a multimillion dollar housing scheme landed a CEO in prison and inspired a new state law on predatory lending. At The Sacramento Bee, Milbourn roamed the state as an enterprise reporter, filing front-page dispatches on everything from wildfires to political scandals to the plight of a tiny mountain town that had no telephone service—in 2008.

Milbourn’s international experience includes a stint as an editor and columnist at a business magazine in Prague. He’s also worked in broadcast journalism, serving as interim executive producer and on-air reporter at KVAL-TV, the CBS affiliate in Eugene.

Milbourn holds an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the University of Oregon, where his studies focused on building new business models for journalism in the digital age. He now teaches graduate and undergraduate courses at the SOJC and the UO’s Lundquist College of Business.
